Cycling Courses and Activities

BSCA 2 day Off Road Mountain Bike Leaders Award
The Mountain Bike Leaders Award is designed to enable leaders, to take young people off road, on rights of ways, bridleways in ‘Open Country’, safely. It has been developed in close consultation with the Hampshire Education Authority by BSCA (British Schools Cycling Assn) and ABCC (Assn of British Cycle Coaches).
It is therefore approved by the ABCC, which provides Coach Education and qualification for various Governing Bodies in cycle sport.

On successfully completing and passing the course and its practical assessments, the leader will be qualified, and entered onto the registers of BSCA and the ABCC at Teaching Certificate Level. Additionally this means that leaders will be able to obtain £2 million of insurance plus other benefits of the ABCC if they so wish.

The Mountain Bike Leaders Course is heavily weighted towards practical mountain bike off-road safety with young people and addresses the following:

1). Group control and the specifics of a cycling group
2). Map Navigation specific to cycling off-road
3). Regulations and guidelines for safe practice
4). Choice, correct sizing and setting up a bike
5). Safety checks on bikes and maintenance
6). On and off-road safety riding technique
7). Clothing and equipment
8). Feeding and drinking to avoid sudden fatigue
9). Heat and cold, avoidance and recognition of problems
10). Communications, Leaders equipment and checklists
11).  Highlight important areas of off-road first aid

All applicants must come with a road worthy mountain bike, a helmet that complies with ANSI or SNELL standards, and must be prepared to ride off-road for up to 3 hours, no matter what the weather!

The course will run from 0900 to 1700 on both days or as arranged by Instructor.
Both days must be attended to obtain the Award.

There is a need to show evidence of competence of managing groups of children. This can either be as a qualified teacher or youth worker, or by having a qualification that is assessed in group management e.g. Mountain Leaders Award. This can also be achieved by 20 hours of assessed activity supervised by someone who has these qualifications (they do not have to be a cyclist) or a named person acceptable to BSCA.

A First Aid Certificate will be required to validate the award. (Before or after completion of the course)

The Award is valid for three years, and it is recommended that an Annual refresher is undertaken although not essential.

Cost of the course will be:-
Minimum 5 people: £120 per person

6 – 8 people: £110 per person

9 – 12 maximum: £100 per person
